If you find yourself wandering through the quaint, historic town of Akizuki in Fukuoka, make sure to stop by The Sound of Water, The Sound of Earth. This charming café offers more than just a cup of coffee—it invites you into a world where nature and art beautifully intertwine.

Nestled in a renovated 135-year-old building, this café is a hidden gem that radiates warmth and character. Step inside and let the delightful aroma of freshly brewed 一杯立て珈琲 (hand-drip coffee) welcome you; this intimate setting features an impressive selection of handmade pottery, lovingly crafted in on-site workshops. The atmosphere is nothing short of magical, with natural light flooding through large windows, casting soft glows over artisan ceramics and vintage decor.

The menu is simple yet profoundly satisfying. Enjoy their signature 一杯立て珈琲 for just ¥600, or indulge in the 一杯立て珈琲セット at ¥900, which pairs aromatic coffee with one of their exquisite homemade cakes. The カボチャパイ (pumpkin pie) is a must-try, consistently praised by visitors like 'Elton Sim' for its affordability and homemade touch. Another highlight is the レアチーズケーキ (rare cheesecake), which has left many patrons—including 'ten ten'—eager for seconds!

However, it’s not just the food that makes this café special; it’s the people. The warmhearted owners create an atmosphere where everyone feels welcomed and at ease, as 'Zac L' noted in his review of the pottery workshops that are regularly held on weekends. Whether you’re here for an inspiring lesson in ceramics or to simply unwind with a slice of cake, the attentive staff elevates your experience from ordinary to extraordinary.

'みみみみみ' perfectly encapsulated the essence of this haven, mentioning the artful décor that keeps you engaged even while you wait. The expanse of the interior, complemented by the soothing sounds of a nearby stream, creates an ideal backdrop for relaxation, socializing, or even quiet contemplation.

As you sip your coffee, let the peaceful ambiance transport you away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. With a limited schedule—open only on weekends and holidays—this café embodies the essence of a hidden retreat, encouraging you to savor each moment spent within its walls.

Visit The Sound of Water, The Sound of Earth and immerse yourself in a delightful experience that balances exquisite flavors with artistic expression, creating memories you'll cherish long after you leave.

The owners were friendly, warm-hearted, and made you feel at ease and welcomed. The coffee and pumpkin pie were affordable, homemade, and delicious. We visited the place on both Sat and Sun because of how enjoyable and lovely the experience was. I would come back here again when I visit Akizuki.

Amazing experience. This place has a pottery workshop, in a charming 135 year old building, with so much character. The workshop runs daily and reservations are required. Takako-san is patient and flexible, a good pottery teacher who brings out the best in your imagination. Wide variety of clays, stamps, finishes, and glazes. Clear instruction in English and very reasonable pricing. In the building beside, is a weekend cafe, where Terasaki-san makes a perfect coffee. With a slice of homemade cheesecake, you can sit there for hours enjoying the view of nature and tranquil in comfort, behind a large glass window and beside a fireplace. Both Terasaki-san and Takako-san are excellent hosts, warm, inviting, and sincere, with excellent English for ease of communication. Will be revisiting this place often!

Pretty much as good as it gets if you're looking for an artsy, cozy specially tea house cafe. The friendly proprietor cinches the deal. Set in an old, gracious home decorated with antiques, art and fast fully made crafts, this is the perfect place to take a break from your visit to this quaint old castle town.

Very very friendly and generous owner. We got free ginkgo and he even gave us his lunch (sweet potatoes). Had a really great time there! One of the best experience among all the cafes I visited :) strongly recommend. I really like their cheesecake and tea as well :)
